Empowering Women: Volunteer for Gender Equality in Nepal

Gender Equality Internship

Project Description

Introduction

Nepal, a nation rich in culture and diversity, faces significant challenges in achieving gender equality. Deep-rooted societal norms have led to disparities in women’s education, employment, and leadership opportunities. The Empowering Women: Volunteer for Gender Equality in Nepal project aims to address these issues by engaging volunteers in initiatives that promote women’s rights, education, and empowerment.

Background

Despite progress in recent years, gender inequality remains a pressing issue in Nepal. Statistics reveal that only 69.4% of women are literate, compared to 83.6% of men, limiting women’s access to opportunities and personal growth. Economically, less than 26% of women are employed in paid jobs, with many involved in unpaid domestic and agricultural labor, reinforcing economic dependence. Alarmingly, nearly 47% of women experience gender-based violence in their lifetime, yet support services remain scarce and inaccessible for many.

Key Objectives

  • Enhance Educational Opportunities: Increase literacy and educational attainment among women and girls.
  • Promote Economic Independence: Provide vocational training and support for women-led businesses.
  • Combat Gender-Based Violence: Raise awareness and offer support services to survivors.
  • Foster Leadership: Encourage women’s participation in governance and decision-making roles.
  • Engage Men and Boys: Involve males in advocating gender equality to create a supportive environment.

Why Volunteer for This Project?

The Need

Gender inequality in Nepal affects various aspects of life, from education to economic participation. For instance, 9 in 10 Dalit women (the lowest caste in Nepal) are uneducated, highlighting the intersectionality of caste and gender discrimination. Additionally, 8 in 10 women experience domestic violence, underscoring the urgent need for intervention.

Global Relevance

This project aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. By volunteering, you contribute to a global movement striving for equitable societies.
