INTRODUCTION

Volunteers Initiative Nepal (VIN), established in 2005 by a diverse group drawn from development workers, educationalists, social activists and other professionals, is a non-religious, non-political, non-for-profit, and non-governmental organization (NGO). VIN is officially registered under the Society Act with the District Administration Office, Kathmandu (Reg. No. 147/062/63), and affiliated with the Social Welfare Council Nepal (SWC) (Affiliation No. 20910). VIN focuses on community-based projects involving local volunteers backed-up by international volunteers in Nepal.

VIN has been mobilizing local and international volunteers in various development sectors including educational programs, trainings and counseling that significantly contribute to enhance the livelihoods of poor and marginalized / disadvantaged communities in Nepal. VIN has also been deploying its volunteers in teaching, teacher training, environment, health and sanitation, helping children in orphanages, women empowerment support, youth empowerment and entrepreneurship development.

1. Community Empowerment Programmes

To Improve the socio-economic status of poor and marginalized communities through sustainable, inclusive and equitable integrated community empowerment programmes representing in all 6 programme areas.

This will be done through enhanced Education, Health and Environment, Economy & basic Infrastructure Development by implementing Women’s empowermentChildren’s developmentYouth empowerment and Public health & Medical careEnvironment Conservation and Disaster Risk Reduction programmes with special focus on women and children by conducting soft skills & hands-on training and research, developing basic infrastructure, mobilising skilled local and international volunteers to promote equality, economic well-being and basic human rights.

1. Children’s Development

The goal of Children’s Development is to ensure Children’s holistic development – physical, mental, social and creativity.

  • Make Children aware of their rights.
  • Children’s Club formation – Facilitation and Training on Child rights.
  • Enhance knowledge and awareness level of children, parents, teachers, and local stakeholders through relevant trainings on child rights issues.
  • Provide access to basic education to all children and create child friendly environment in targeted school and communities
  • Support sponsorship programme for poor and marginalized children.
  • Improve/Construction of Early Childhood Education Development (ECD) Center.
  • Develop teachers/volunteers on ECD education/Kindergarten approaches.
  • Enrol children in school and increase access to education in targeted communities.
  • Ensure child rights being practiced in schools.
  • Improve/construct child, gender and disable friendly infrastructure.
  • Conduct research on children’s issues.

2. Women’s Empowerment

The goal of Women’s Empowerment is to empower women socially and economically through education, life skills and income generation initiatives.

Educate women on literacy, rights and life skills

  • Enhance knowledge, skill and awareness level of women through relevant trainings on women rights and life skills.
  • Ensure economic freedom of women through women entrepreneurship development
  • Women groups formation
  • Provide life skill training

  • Income generating intervention/promotion of micro and small enterprise development
  • Establish micro credit cooperatives
  • Establish Women Business Centers
  • Establish Community Learning Centers (CLC)

3. Public Health & Medical Care

The goal of Public health and Medical is to create healthy communities by controlling and preventing diseases and increasing access to health facilities, hygiene sanitation and education

  • Identify common health problems and its associated risk factor in communities
  • Conduct research or baseline studies on common health problems of targeted communities
  • Develop community awareness about health, hygiene and sanitation
  • Awareness and education programme on maintaining proper health, hygiene and sanitation at both school and community level
  • Increase and improve access to hygiene and sanitation facilities and quality health service
  • Improve/construction of school and household toilets, waste management, handwashing station, drying racks.
  • Mobilizing health camps, community clinic for medical support, geriatric care, promotion of health insurance, ODF campaign and declaration
  • Establish and improve well equipped community hospital, public health post and treatment center at targeted project sites to ensure access to basic health and medical facilities

4. Youth Empowerment

The goal of the Youth Empowerment program is to educate youth on their rights and social and vocational life skills.

  • Enhance knowledge, skill and awareness level of youth through relevant trainings on their rights and life skills.
  • Ensure economic freedom of youth through entrepreneurship development
  • Youth club formation
  • Provide life skills training
  • Entrepreneurship development training
  • Establish Community Learning Center

5. Environment Conservation

The goal of the Environment Conservation programme is to conserve, promote and protect environment and culture for future generation.

  • Identify common environmental problems and associated factors for climate change
  • Conduct research on common environment problems and its associated factors in targeted areas
  • Prevent and control water, land and air pollution and develop best practices for environment conservation, protection and promotion
  • Enhance knowledge and awareness level on environmental conservation, protection and promotion techniques through relevant training on bio diversity conservation, climate change mitigation and preparedness, DRR, waste management
  • Implement and promotion of agro forestry and agro farming
  • Educate on Protection and conservation of natural and cultural heritage site
  • Enhance knowledge on importance of Protection, conservation and rehabilitation of natural and historical heritage sites
  • Implement Water Resource Management programme
  • Identify heritage site with conservation and rehabilitation programme

6. Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR)

The goal of Disaster Risk Reduction Programme is to minimize the risk of natural disaster and provide relief and safety to vulnerable communities.

  • Educate Communities on Disaster Risk Reduction, Response, Mitigation and Preparedness
  • Conduct research/baseline on most common disasters and their associated risk factors in targeted areas
  • Enhance knowledge and skill on Disaster Risk Reduction, Response, Mitigation Preparedness and Resilient techniques
  • Promote and ensure disaster resilient infrastructure
  • Construction and rehabilitation of disaster resilient infrastructure (household, school and public toilets, water supply schemes, micro irrigation, houses etc.)
  • Provision of DRR fund.
  • Provision of Resources at Institution to support during emergency.

1. Volunteering Projects

The goal of Volunteering programme is to inspire more people to get involved in the meaningful projects VIN runs for the empowerment of the marginalised communities in Nepal. More helping hands meaning reaching out to more communities in need.

Explore more volunteering projects; increase number of professional volunteers and deploy them efficiently in community development programmes.

 Increase number of national and international volunteers

  • Develop and update reader friendly VIN’s website.
  • Communicate opportunities in VIN through social networking.
  • Organize national and international volunteer promotion campaign.
  • Represent national and international workshop and present paper of VIN’s volunteering program.
  • Prepare promotion materials and organize programs home & abroad.
  • Develop network with national and international universities, colleges volunteering organization and others.
  • Mobilize national and international volunteers based on their qualification, experience and project needs in efficient and effective manner.
  • Identify the roles of volunteers in VIN’s projects.
  • Develop volunteer management skill with specified staff through relevant training, workshop, feedback etc.
  • Develop appropriate work plans for volunteers.
  • Organize training and orientation for volunteers.
  • Involve volunteers in different Projects.
  • Follow up regularly and collect feedback.
  • Organize review meetings with volunteers.
  • Develop appropriate evaluation format.
