Child Protection

Current Situation

  • 1 in 2 girls are married before 18 years of age.
  • 1 in 5 % children are engaged in child labor.
  • 1 in 15 girls aged 15-19 give birth.
  • 1 in 2 children has been a victim of bullying.

Child Protection is a big issue in Nepal and internationally from long back. Violence come without boundaries in terms of class, caste, culture, language or ethnicity. However, is more frequent and persistent among the vulnerable communities. In Nepal, children are majority in statics, but minority in social status. They are not always safe in their homes or in their schools even under unbroken care and protection. They constantly become victims of violence, ill-treatment, sexual abuse as well as torture. Additionally, significant number of children continue to live under insecurity facing risks of violations of their rights. Many times such torture have permanent consequences in children leaving them in more vulnerable situation. Significant impacts can be seen on their health, social, emotional, physical development and school performance leading to a life-long mental insecurity.

Project Goal

VIN aims to ensure that every child is protected and children’s rights are being practiced in its working communities. By 2030, we hope 80 % of children, parents, teachers and other stakeholders are aware on child right issues in all targeted areas.

SDG 16: Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.

Every child has the right be safe and feel safe. It is important to end abuse, exploitation, trafficking and all forms of torture against children.

Project Description

At VIN we believe that more can be done to safeguard children and promote their rights. It is necessary to be the voice of the voiceless section of the community. For this cause, VIN has been conducting awareness sessions in schools and communities focusing on Child Rights. Children along with the adults are made aware about the need and importance of rights for a child’s all-round development. Issues of child abuse, trafficking, child labour, bad touch-good touch, self-defence techniques etc. are discussed in children’s clubs to make home, schools and societies a safe place for children.

As of 2020, VIN’s Child Protection Project has been able support 41,021 children in marginalized communities of Nepal.
