Health and Wellbeing

Current Situation

Nepal faces numerous challenges with regards to health and wellbeing. Due to poverty, most of the residents are focused on fulfilling their basic needs like food and shelter. As a result, health and wellbeing is often out of the picture. Alcoholism is very common in Nepal, almost every person from child to adult drink home-brewed alcohol as a culture. Smoking is equally wide-spread throughout Nepal. Mental health still remains as a taboo. People do not consider mental health as an important aspect of one’s wellbeing.

People have limited knowledge about health and wellbeing. Economic and social inequalities, rapid urbanization, climate change and pollution have served as a major challenge in ensuring peoples wellbeing.

Project Goal

VIN aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages of the people at our working communities – Okhaldhunga, Kathmandu and Nuwakot. By 2030, we hope to establish at least one community hospital with an ambulance service in Okhaldhunga.

SDG 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all at all ages

The health of a person is not solely determined by physical well-being alone, rather mental status, socio-economic, psychological and behavioural factors. Hence, it is essential to intervene on all these co-related factors.

Project Description

The project ensures that people are aware about what contributes to a healthy body and mind. Through the Health and Wellbeing Project, VIN provides alternative ideas to safeguard health, healthy social engagement, entertainment and activities like yoga, meditations, mindfulness exercises, arts, sports, dances, music, and much more. Mental health awareness is also conducted so as to normalize it and remove stigmatization.

As of 2020, VIN’s Health and Wellbeing Project has been able support 7,753 people in marginalized communities of Nepal.
