Current Situation
- 7 in 10 women endure verbal abuse.
- 3 in 10 women undergo emotional abuse.
- 8 in 10 perpetrators are always family members.
- 50+ Nepali women are trafficked to India every day.
- Law enforcement believe reported human trafficking cases is just a fraction of the whole.
Nepal is infamous as being one of the “source” countries for human trafficking. Tens of thousands of people are trafficked in Nepal every year. The primary victims of human trafficking are underage and young girls who are forced into for sex trade and manual labour.
The two major causes of Women Trafficking are unemployment and lack of awareness. These socio-economic problems are exploited by traffickers to lure women with false promises of good employment abroad.
Project Goal
The Women’s Trafficking Prevention project helps prevent the trafficking of young girls and women by generating awareness around women trafficking and helping women and young girls become more resilient towards the lure traffickers. Further, the WTP works towards providing essential life skills trainings help women become more socially and economically independent and secure.
The project contributes towards the SDG5 2030 by promoting gender equality and empowering women and girls to lead more self-reliant and resilient lives. By 2030, we hope to have empowered women to become independent, resilient and more knowledgeable about Women Trafficking.
Project Interventions
The WTP tackles various areas related to women’s trafficking through different interventions, including:
- Awareness activities for communicating and advocating prevention methods for women’s trafficking.
- Skills development and income generation activities for women. Vocational training such as embroidery, sewing, knitting ECD training, candle making, organic farming etc.
- Activities that highlight issues related to trafficking, including sex trafficking, sexually transmitted diseases, unsafe abortion, and rights violation.
- Working at the locals with Women Groups to empower women to take up leadership roles in their communities.
