Current Situation
- 2 in 3 poor households have no access to Microcredit Cooperative support.
- 1 in 2 women are classified as economically inactive.
- Female to male earned income ratio is 0.51 for the same amount of work.
Women in Nepal continue to lack the access to and control over productive assets such as land, finance, or enterprise. These challenges are more severe for women in rural and marginalized communities. Without the access to credit women are deprived of the opportunity, and their right, to escape poverty and financial dependency.
Project Goal
The MCS project aims to promote socio-economic development of women by helping develop autonomous microcredit cooperatives within communities. Such cooperative support programs designed for the women not only aid self-development but also strengthens the nation’s economy. Microcredit helps empower women and provide them with a certain level of financial independence and a possible pathway for prosperity.
The project contributes toward the SDG1 2030 by helping women overcome poverty and gain economic security and independence. By 2030, we hope to have helped every woman in our working areas gain access to microcredit cooperative support for strengthening financial stability.
Project Interventions
The MCS project carries out various activities to build financial independence in marginalized women, including:
- Providing women with access to affordable loans and credit to start their own businesses.
- Conducting trainings on business management, book-keeping, and other skills to equip women with the necessary knowledge and skills for successfully planning and implementing economic activities or ventures.
- Activities that help women familiarize themselves with the idea of microcredit cooperative and the benefits associated.
Project Achievements
As of 2020, VIN’s Microcredit Cooperative Support Project has been able to financially aid a total of 3,442 women in marginalized communities.
