Reconstruction and Sustainability

Current Situation

  • 1 in 3 people in Nepal were affected by the massive 2015 earthquake.
  • 7 in 10 victims are still living in temporary shelters.
  • Girls trafficking significantly increased during the crisis period.

An earthquake of 7.8 magnitude struck Nepal on April 25, 2015. There was a mass destruction of buildings in Kathmandu and other affected districts. A number of landslides and avalanche followed the disaster taking a total of 9,000 lives and leaving 22,000 with injuries. More than 600,000 house destroyed and more than 288,000 damaged in the 14 worst-hit districts.

Nepal has always been suffering from numerous disasters like earthquake, landslides, flood, etc. And, noteworthy fractions of the affected residents are forced to live in temporary shelters with inadequate access to safe drinking water and sanitation. More than 5 years have passed since the disaster and yet people have not recovered from the loss of life and asset.

Project Goal

VIN aims to provide a long-term and sustainable solution to bring back a normal state of affairs, along with increased livelihood opportunities. By 2030, we hope 60% of the affected people in target areas be resettled along with entrepreneurial skills to continue a decent lifestyle.

SDG 11: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable

It is necessary to strengthen resilience and increase adaptive capacity to natural disasters so that people are less vulnerable to social and financial aftermath.

Project Description

The project is designed with the concept of Building Back Better for the lives of disaster victims. The activities continue until all systems return to normal or better. There are many opportunities during this period to enhance prevention and increase preparedness, thus reducing vulnerability. Rebuilding Earthquake Resistant Infrastructure (RERI) is one of the major target of the project. VIN supports in building schools, community centres, and individual houses. We have also been actively facilitating skills development, entrepreneurial activities and vocational training for the victims. Awareness programs along with individual/group counselling is conducted with youth and children. The project focuses on proper reintegration of victims back to their communities and lifestyle.

As of 2020, VIN’s Reconstruction and Sustainability Project has been able support 26,214 affected people in disaster struck communities of Nepal.
